Manns Point is named in honour of Captain Gother Kerr Mann (1809 - 1899) First Chief Commissioner for Railways, Builder of Fitzroy Dock and Superintendent of Convicts at Cockatoo Island.
Tanker docked at Shell Terminal. Looking north-east past Berry Island Reserve (left) to Waverton. The white structures behind the tanker on the far shore are part of HMAS Waterhen.
Looking south-east to the city with Balls Head far left and Goat Island centre-left.
Looking south to Yurulbin Point with Snails Bay mooring dolphins, Balmain and ANZAC Bridge in the background.
Looking south, Ferry 'Royale' passing waterfront houses of Louisa Road, Birchgrove.
Looking south to Yurulbin Point, Birchgrove.

Our first Point of call.

If you like the smell of petrol, this is your point.

Good expansive views of the Harbour from Balls Head and Waverton to Anzac Bridge and Birchgrove.

With the added bonus, if you’re so inclined, of the aforementioned fumes accompanied by the gentle hum of tankers unloading.

Manns Point facts

  • The Harbour is at its narrowest between Manns Point and Long Nose Point (now Yurulbin Point).
  • The first Harbour tunnel was built between these two points. It carried electric cables for the North Shore Railway and tramways. The tunnel was flooded about 1930 but remained in use until 1969. Being new at this, we forgot to take a photo of the tunnel plaque.
