Lovely big windswept point, a beautiful diversion on The Spit to Manly scenic walk. It’s a 10 to 15 minute walk through coastal heath down to the point. The lighthouse gives it just a hint of the Mediteranean with its whitewashed walls and dome. On a hot day if you squint you could almost be in Greece.
Grotto Point has the distinction of being one of the first places to be marked on a map of Sydney Harbour by European settlers. In early 1788 Lieutenant Bradley’s survey party named it after a natural stone arch at the tip of the point. The arch was probably destroyed by a storm soon after the arrival of the First Fleet. That’ll explain why we didn’t see it then.
Long-time favourite. Look out for the giant’s brain.
